INJECTABLE SUSPENSION

Composition:

Each ml suspension contains:

100 mg ampicillin base (as trihydrate)

250,000 I.U. colistin sulphate

Spectrum of activity:

Ampicillin is a semi-synthetic broad spectrum antibiotic with bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp. (b-lactamase negative), Pasteurella spp., Bacillus anthracis, Bordetella, Brucella, Clostridium spp., Corynebacterium spp., E. coli, Haemophilus spp., Proteus spp., Shigella spp..

Colistin, an antibiotic belonging to the group of cyclic polypeptides is a small spectrum antibiotic with bactericidal activity against Gram-negative bacteria (e.g. E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella spp., Enterobacter aerogenes, Haemophilus spp., Pasteurella spp., Brucella spp., Camphylobacter spp. and Shigella spp.). It has no activity against Gram-negative cocci and Gram-positive bacteria. Combination of both antibiotics is mostly additive and in some cases synergistic. After intramuscular administration, therapeutic blood levels are reached within one hour after administration and are maintained for about 12 hours.

Indications:

Bacterial infections caused by micro organisms susceptible to ampicillin and/or colistin, like intestinal-, respiratory- and urogenital infections, mastitis, metritis and arthritis, in cattle, pigs, goats, dogs and cats.

Contra-indications:

Renal dysfunction, hypersensitivity to penicillin’s (antidote: antihistaminic treatment), combination with cephalosporin’s, because of enhanced nephrotoxicity, use in small herbivores (like rabbits and guinea pigs), new-borns, infections caused by penicilinase-producing bacteria.

Side-effects:

Reversible neurotoxic and nephrotoxic symptoms, when used for a long time or at high doses, hypersensitivity reactions and sometimes tissue reactions may occur after intramuscular administration.
