INJECTABLE SOLUTION

Composition:

Each ml solution contains: 100 mg ketamine (as hydrochloride).

Spectrum of activity:

Ketamine is a rapid-acting agent, whose pharmacological action is characterized by anaesthesia and profound analgesia, normal pharyngeal-laryngeal reflexes, mild cardiac stimulation and mild respiratory depression. Skeletal muscle tone is variable and may be normal, enhanced or diminished.

In contrast to other anaesthetics, protective reflexes, such as coughing and swallowing and other reflexes (e.g. corneal reflex) are maintained. At the recommended doses, cats become ataxic in about 5 minutes, with anaesthesia lasting 10-30 minutes; the recovery time lasts about 30-60 minutes.

Indications:

Ketamine may be used in cattle, horse, sheep, goats, cats and dogs for restraint or as single aesthetic agent for diagnostic or minor, brief surgical procedures (that do not require skeletal muscle relaxation), e.g. x-raying, castration, jaw-operation, nose or ear operation, tooth extraction, cleaning of the teeth, etc.).

Contra-indications:

Liver- or renal dysfunctions, heart- and vascular diseases,  intracranial surgery, glancoma.

Side-effects:

Precaution: Whenever the injection causes an increased muscle tone it is advised to add a muscle relaxant. To prevent salivation, atropine may be added. Protect the eyes from drying by administration of eye-ointment. Since the reflexes of pharynx, larynx and trachea are still present after injection, ketamine cannot be used alone during operations in this area.
